Spelthorne Design Code

Author: Richard Eastham

Date: Jul 25, 2024

Over June and July, Richard has been collaborating with local residents, politicians and young people in Spelthorne to help develop a borough-wide design code. He has spent many hours on the ground, exploring the streets of the various neighbourhoods, as well as in the classroom and at the local youth club.

For this project, Feria Urbanism is part of a multidisciplinary team, led by David Lock Associates Ltd, that includes Støriie (Laura Mulhern), Fathom Architects and Richard Latcham. Feria Urbanism and Støriie have been tasked with the design and delivery of the early engagement phases, gathering public opinion on architecture, urban design, streets and spaces. Our findings will be taken into the next phase of the project when the draft design code starts to be developed in more detail.

Laura and Richard have been working closely together over recent weeks and have been a great team. Together, they have run 30 hours of in-person engagement, and also run a series of digital walks that combine the Zoom and Google maps – a technique that Laura successfully developed during the 2020 pandemic lockdown and has since been adopted by other urbanist practitioners.
