It was an inspirational few days in Ipswich at the National Urban Design Group Conference. I was invited to speak in the opening session, “Making It Happen: Collaborative Mechanisms for Place Delivery.” My talk, “Maps, Meetings & Meaning,” explored how Feria Urbanism engages diverse groups to create responsive urban design solutions. By combining technical investigation with space for imagination and emotion, we aim to achieve the best outcomes.

Highlights included Kath Cockshaw’s work with Ipswich Central and the Thomas Wolsey 550 initiative, Chris King’s reminder that “collaboration needs structure,” and Charlotte Norman’s impressive transformation of Stoke Bridge, showing how small budgets can deliver big impacts. Hugo Nowell shared updates on Urban Flourishing, while John Gummer, Lord Deben, closed the first day with a powerful speech. The second day began with Rasmus Astrup’s project to reveal Manchester’s hidden rivers, followed by Tara Gbolade’s analysis of human connections. James Perry and Claire Harper presented their high street revival in Newcastle, and Clare Wilks shared work in Bangor. Andreas Markides closed with reflections on values and friendships in urbanism.

It was also a pleasure to spend time with colleagues and friends. Feria Urbanism was proud to sponsor the event, alongside David Lock Associates and Clifton Emery Design.
