It has been an interesting and challenging few days in Watchet, Somerset. Earlier this week we gained permission to close a surface car park in order to test ideas for how the town might become greener, more welcoming, more biodiverse, more climate resilient, and more people focused. The temporary closure created space to explore new possibilities for civic life and environmental improvement.
As expected, there was some pushback from those concerned about the loss of parking spaces. At the same time, others felt the concept was not radical enough, suggesting that the town should go further in reimagining its public spaces. This mix of responses highlights the complexity of balancing everyday needs with longer-term ambitions for change.
The project is already generating valuable insights into how Watchet can evolve, and there will be more to share soon as ideas continue to develop.
