Our team was approached by Bournemouth Borough Council to assist in the delivery of a £8.5m public realm works programme for the Lansdowne quarter of the town centre.
The Lansdowne is characterised by a series of tall modern buildings and lower-rise heritage buildings, all clustered around what is currently a busy roundabout. We were tasked with building support and enthusiasm amongst local stakeholders for a significant opportunity to make changes to the public realm, including alterations to traffic movements. These changes can help create a new civic space instead of the traffic-dominated roundabout.
This shift in emphasis will help develop the Lansdowne area into a vibrant urban quarter fit for the future. The success of this neighbourhood is a vital for the wider vision for the town centre.
Participants in the project were drawn from within the local business community within the Lansdowne area, together with user groups of facilities in the area, such as student representatives from both BU and the Bournemouth & Poole College. In early 2019, we prepared a report on the preferred approach and the main issues. Our team was retained to provided design review advice on the emerging public realm scheme in summer 2019.
