Feria Urbanism was appointed to help a neighbourhood forum group in Bristol develop ideas for a neighbourhood plan, focusing on improvements to the public realm at the heart of the community and better countryside access on its edges.
The Knowle West area lies on higher ground about three kilometres south of Bristol city centre. It is where trip-hop pioneer Tricky grew up and the place after which he named his 2008 album, Knowle West Boy.
We developed a series of creative proposals to revitalise Melvin Square — which sits at the centre of the neighbourhood, beside Connaught Primary School — including branding and identity concepts and new street furniture designs, working with local schoolchildren as part of the process.
On the edges of Knowle West are the open spaces of Glyn Vale Open Space, part of the Northern Slopes; Filwood Playing Fields; and Filwood Park and Inns Court with areas of grassland, scrub and broadleaved woodland in between. We developed a strategy to better connect these green areas to give increased recreational access by the wider community.
