Pedestrian Subway Football

Streets & Spaces

We have worked with children and young people on a series of practical urban design projects. One of these events was the transformation of an unloved pedestrian underpass in Bournemouth.

Working with students from the Arts University Bournemouth and the staff and students from the nearby Malmesbury Park Primary School, we ran two pop-up events in an unloved pedestrian underpass.

The first event transformed it into a venue for a magical carol concert, helping test out new lighting and artistic ideas as a precursor to permanent art interventions that were installed in 2014. There was a sporting theme for the second event. Did we create the world’s longest, thinnest indoor football pitch? At 31m x 3m it created an amazing venue for a noisy and fun afternoon of five-a-side football. The children that took part in both pop-up events will never think of the subway in the same way again.
